Re: Improved Hand-Washing Compliance

Assessment: With heroic efforts, compliance has not been able to get above 50% and the results of increased compliance has not been shown to improve infection levels. Clean hands in a germ laden environment is not an answer.

UV Technologies:

Xenex Healthcare, San Antonio, TX, and others.

Pros: 40% reduction in C. difficile and other harmful pathogens.

Cons: Very hazardous to humans – requires trained, dedicated personnel.

• Only effective line-of-site.

• Costly equipment – $ 55-75 K per unit

• NO residual biocidal properties.

Micro-mist, gas and vaporization:

Zimek Systems – Orlando, FL Micro-mist

Pros: Effective in eliminating harmful pathogens

Cons: Requires time consuming two step process estimated to be in excess of 3/4 hour.

 

• Requires two machines: one develops mist over 20 minutes, afterwards, the other extracts the mist from the   room. Total time estimated to be in excess of 45 minutes

• The process has been banned in New Jersey by the New Jersey EPA as harmful to humans

• NO residual biocidal properties

Mist and Vapor systems:

Bioquell Inc., Horsham, PA  Vaporized hydrogen peroxide.

Pros: Effective in eliminating harmful pathogens.

Cons: Very hazardous to humans – requires total area/room lock-down.

• Requires at least 1.5 hour per application using 2 separate systems.

• No residual biocidal properties.

 

Sixlog – Costa Mesa, CA – Ionized hydrogen peroxide

Pros: Effective in eliminating harmful pathogens

Cons: Very hazardous to humans – requires total area/room lock-down

• Requires at least 4- 6 hour per application utilizing several technicians   and a supervisor

• NO residual biocidal properties

Gas System:

AsepticSure – Medizone Int., Sausilito, CA – Ozone gas emission.

Pros: Effective in eliminating harmful   pathogens.

Cons: Very hazardous to humans – requires strict quarantine of area/rooms.

 

 

• Application requires at least 1.5   hours and 2 separate systems.

• NO residual biocidal properties.
